The southern light,
the enchanting
scenery and the
influences of three
cultures have always
inspired artists
in Carinthia. In
Carinthia’s art
museums you can
follow the trail of
modern and contemporary
artists such
as Rainer, Hoke,
Oman, Bischoffshausen,
Schellander,
Staudacher
or Kogelnik.

Museum des Nötscher Kreises.
Under the name Nötscher Kreis the
circle of painters from this small place
at the foot of the Dobratsch found international
recognition: Together with
Schiele and Kokoschka, Sebastian
Isepp, Franz Wiegele and Anton Kolig
were the founders of modern painting
in Austria. They were later joined by
Anton Mahringer, a student of Kolig’s.
Apart from Isepp, who emigrated, they
settled in Nötsch, where today their
memory is preserved at the museum in
the Wiegele house. 2012 will feature a
cross-generation comparison of the
works of Maria Lassnig and Franz
Wiegele, who in his letters expressed
his opinion of some of the nudes she
had drawn.

Werner Berg Museum.
The museum to the painter Werner
Berg, one of the most important 20 th
century Austrian artists, has become a
focus of attraction for art lovers from
all over Europe. His work, whose roots

unique document about his chosen
home, Southern Carinthia. Work in
regions far remote from art centres is
the theme linking the museums in the
joint exhibition project in 2012 by the
Bruck Castle Museum, the Kitzbühel
Town Museum and the Werner Berg
Museum in Bleiburg. Works by the
Austrian painters Egger-Lienz, Walde
and Berg will be on display.
