Kärnten Card mountain and lake tour. We are sitting relaxed in the panoramic cable car which is whisking us away from Annenheim up to the Gerlitzen. As we watch Lake Ossiacher See and the boats getting noticeably smaller, we are getting even more excited about our family-friendly cycle tour of the lake and the many lovely views we are going to enjoy as part of our holiday here. Once the cable car has brought us to the top, we first head off along the educational alpine and forest trail to the Pöllingerhütte mountain and alp museum, in an actively farmed dairy hut. The children are wide-eyed as they discover farming customs dating from around 1900, and they are amazed by the long forgotten tools which the farmers once used for their dairy business and cheese production. A delicious scent wafts under the noses of the hikers and explorers. Have we immersed ourselves so deeply in Carinthia’s history that we can actually smell the culinary refreshments from the farmer’s kitchen? No, the real Everything’s on track at the nostalgic Ferlach railway. Carinthia Magazine 28 reason is the unintended marketing in the form of the smells from the nearby kitchen and bakery of the Pöllingerhütte, one of the oldest mountain lodges on the Gerlitzen. The sun terrace here offers a wonderful view over Central Carinthia, the Karawanken and the Dobratsch. Our tip: Don’t just enjoy the view here! Without fail you must also try the Gerlitzentorte cake made by the landlady of the lodge, pastry chef Erika Peternell. Quickly refreshed we get back to the mountain station of the panoramic Kanzelbahn cable car and head back down again fast – could it be something to do with the calories we haven’t burned up yet? We still have to go on a guided tour of the monkey park in Landskron, and then we fall into our beds, exhausted but happy. Tomorrow is another day, and we are going to be just as hard-working as the bees in Southern Carinthia when we visit the Carnica Bee Experience Museum in Kirschentheuer, plunge into the Bad Eisenkappel adventure pools and take a historic trip on the Rosental steam train in Ferlach. The day after tomorrow we are setting sail on the heavenly Lake Millstätter See on the MS Kärnten, finishing the round trip with a jump into the cool water, and then we will be putting ourselves in the pillory in the torture museum at Sommeregg Castle. But that is another story ... The Obir dripstone caves: geology dating back 200 million years plus an 800 m long underground adventure park. The Cathedral in Gurk, a pier basilica built between 1140 and 1200 in the High Romanesque style. Kärnten Card Prices 2012. 15 April to 26 October 2012.
