CARINTHIA COMPASS.
The Carinthia compass shows you the way.
So you know at a glance which direction to take.
In Austria’s southernmost province, the sunniest in the Alps-Adriatic region.
Origins.
The name Carinthia (Carantania)
comes from the Celtic. Carantania
(in Slovenian Karantanija, also
Korotan) was a Slavic principality
which originated in the 7th century
AD. The ancient Celts and Romans
valued the variety of landscapes,
the thermal spas and the places
of mystical power.
Our region in the Dreiländereck.
Carinthia is Austria’s southernmost
province and lies in the heart of the
Alps-Adriatic region. It covers 9,536
km2 to the south of the main ridge of
the Alps and borders on Slovenia and
Italy. The approximately 560,000 inhabitants
are open people with a Mediterranean
feel for life. The intersection of
the three different cultures is marked
by the Dreiländereck near Arnoldstein.

Shopping.
Klagenfurt, Villach, St. Veit
and Spittal offer plenty of
choice for shopoholics: from
little corner shops to designer
boutiques. The City Arkaden
shopping centre in Klagenfurt
(120 shops) and Atrio (more
than 80 shops) in Villach complete
this shopping paradise.

Quality of life between
the Alps and the Adriatic.
Carinthia is known as the region
of mountains and lakes: 93 of its
peaks are over 3,000 metres high,
and at 3,798 metres the Grossglockner
is the highest mountain
in Austria. 1,270 lakes, including
200 swimming lakes with water
pure enough to drink, 8,000 kilometres
of rivers, 60 medicinal
springs and 43 fresh water glaciers
make Carinthia the richest province
in terms of water. The proximity to
the Mediterranean, the above
average hours of sunshine and the
silvery-green mountain backdrop
also make Carinthia the heart of
the Alps-Adriatic region.

Major towns and cities.
Carinthia’s capital is Klagenfurt
am Wörthersee (www.klagenfurttourismus.at)
with around 94,000
inhabitants, and the major centres
are Villach, St. Veit, Spittal an der
Drau and Wolfsberg. The oldest
town is called Friesach.
Summer traditions.
At Easter, pagan and Christian customs
meet up with blazing fires. Every
year on Assumption Day the statue
of the Virgin Mary from the St. Josef
private chapel is taken across Lake
Wörthersee. The people of Villach,
the town by the River Drau, mark
the high point of their week of traditions
with the Villacher Kirchtag.
Culinary festivals are very popular,
such as the Hermagor Bacon Festival,
the Irschen Herb Festival, the Neuhaus
Buckwheat Festival, the Salami
Festival in Eberndorf, or the Carinthian
Pasta Festival in Oberdrauburg.
Active between
the mountains and lakes.
Carinthia is a paradise for hikers,
Nordic walkers and cyclists. Which
is no surprise, as the incredibly varied
topography is tops for all sports
lovers: With the high mountains, the
lower mountain ranges with their alpine
landscapes and the gentle plains,
there is everything on offer here! The
many cycle routes along the countless
waterways blend harmoniously into
the gentle alpine holiday setting.

Climate.
Carinthia can thank its location in
the Alps-Adriatic region for its mild
climate and above average hours of
sunshine. No surprise then that Diex,
the sunniest place in Austria with
more than 2,300 hours of sunshine
a year, lies in the heart of Carinthia.
The main ridge of the Alps also
performs a protective function
by weakening bad weather fronts
as they arrive from the west.

Portraits.
Carinthia has not only produced sporting
greats such as the World Pool Champion
Jasmin Ouschan, but also many literary
greats such as Ingeborg Bachmann, Gert
Jonke or Peter Handke. The Nötscher
Kreis circle with its European outlook was
active in the visual arts of the early 20th century, including the painters Franz
Wiegele and Anton Mahringer. Wolfgang
Puck, the star chef who is a native of
St. Veit, owns more than 70 restaurants in
the USA. And one of the most important
composers and singers, Udo Jürgens, who
grew up on the Magdalensberg, has sold
more than 100 million records to date.
