MONGOLEI GRUSSBOTSCHAFT Enkhsaikhan Jargalsaikhan Greetings from the Ambassador of Mongolia to Austria „Austria, with its open, traditionally good-neighborly policy situated in the heart of Europe is one of the important European partners.“ ENKHSAIKHAN JARGALSAIKHAN It gives me a great pleasure to greet the readers of this prestigious and very informative Austrian magazine ‘Society’ that is introducing Mongolia to its readers. Today Mongolia is emerging as a vibrantly developing country that is expanding its outreach to other countries as never before since the fall of the Great Mongol Empire in the 13th century. We are grateful that Austria was the second Western country to have established diplomatic relations with Mongolia during the cold war almost half a century ago. Throughout the cold war Mongolia was virtually unknown to the outside world except for its rich history, the great Chinggis Khan, the semi-nomadic way of life of its people and the ‘un-inhabitable’ Gobi desert with a treasure of dinosaur fossils. In the past 20 years since the simultaneous democratic and market reforms were launched, the country has become one of the dynamically developing economies of Asia. Politically, it is a newly emerging democracy that in 2003-2006 led the movement of new or restored democracies and since 1 July of this year is chairing the Community of Democracies, a coalition of democratic countries to promote democratic rules, norms and institutions in the world. Mongolia’s ‘third neighbor’ policy is aimed at reaching out beyond the immediate neighbors – Russia and China - to other countries and developing mutually ben- 10 | SOCIETY 2_11 eficial and enriching relations with them. Austria, with its open, traditionally goodneighborly policy situated in the heart of Europe is one of the important European partners that offers a wealth of experience in modernizing the country and bringing Europe closer to Mongolia. The country’s nomadic culture is an important jewel in the treasures of world cultures that can further enrich the international traditions of the Austrian culture. On the other hand, Mongolia’s geo-economic location between two emerging markets as well as its mineral and natural wealth offer broad possibilities for Austrians to do business in Mongolia and jointly serve these two giant markets. It is for this reason I welcome the ‘Society’ magazine’s decision to offer its space to introduce Mongolia to the Austrian people and its business community. I would like to take this opportunity to convey to the Austrian people and the readers of the ‘Society’ magazine my best wishes and express the hope that you will find Mongolia intriguing, interesting and open for cooperation and interaction. Enkhsaikhan Jargalsaikhan
