MEISSEN Joaillerie

56 ® were no longer built in the 17th century, this picturesque staircase is probably the only remaining example of a grand palazzo structure in a private home in Milan. Coffered ceilings from the Renaissance and valuable frescos on the walls and ceilings – classic friezes, grotesque paintings and medallions depicting mythological scenes – prove just how ornate the palazzo once was. Even though renovations, demolition and bombardments during the Second World War partially destroyed the valuable paintings by Lombardian artists, the remaining artworks have been painstakingly restored to their former glory during the renovation of the VILLA MEISSEN ® w , such as those around the archway of the interior building’s high vaulted ceiling. The restored Villa makes you realise just how lavish and luxurious life was for its former residents, the family of the Marquess of Carcassola, whose lands, fiefdom and revenues brought them respect and riches in the 16th century. When the restoration works began in spring 2011, it was quickly discovered that large parts of the former “Casa Carcassola” from the 16th century still sur vived despite several renovations and damage during the war, but they were only partially visible. In the main hall, several elements from ancient times came to light under several layers of plaster: the remains of medieval walls with outlines of windows and pointed arches prove that the palazzo has layer upon layer of history. Some elements even date back as far as Roman times. The most important architectural elements behind the neoclassical façade, which comprises a rectangular main courtyard, an interior building and a side courtyard, appear to date from the 15th and 16th centuries. An arch on the north-western side of the courtyard leads to the atrium whose coffered ceiling has revealed traces of frescos. Columns made from Tuscan Serrizo stone flank a flight of steps which leads to the second floor. This staircase is crowned by an octagonal tower with arched windows.
